Hi Cindy, Thanks so much for your lovely visit. It's great to connect, and likewise, I'll look forward to our wakes crossing at some point in the 'real' world. :-) Cheers, Lyn.

Lynette,
I found your site via the Women Who Sail group on FB. Oh dear. We have the same child only I a raising the male form. Wow, just wow. I can relate on so many levels (as a homeschooling mom, as a live aboard, as a writer).... sigh. Yes, I get it. All of it. And my your daughter is a fabulous story teller. If she ever got together with my son they just might disappear together into another world, happily chatting non-stop in an elevated vocabulary spinning yarns into eternity. I will definitely share her story with him. And kudos to you for meeting her where she is and writing out the story for her. I need to do that more (except he often talks faster than I can type). I am glad to "meet" you and I hope our paths cross one day anchored out somewhere (we're in the Chesapeake Bay).
cheers, Cindy

p.s. sorry for typos... nursing a toddler while I type.

Hi Jo, thanks for stopping by. You must be feeling very excited as your own release gets closer. :-) Yep, misleading the customer's expectations is such an obvious mistake, but the industry is still very young and so this shouldn't come as a surprise. It's a reflection of both the inadequacy of the review system itself and the enthusiasm of self-pubbing authors who have been gifted with a lot of freedom and are in a rush to use it. On this train of thought, I rather like Chuck Wendig's take on self-publishing, here's the link. He's good for a laugh and he's hits that proverbial nail: http://terribleminds.com/ramble/2011/12/07/the-seduction-of-self-publishing/

Thanks for your input Dario. The sheer volume of material is both our great opportunity and our problem. As I said, "primordial soup"! Something will emerge, but we're not quite sure yet what form it will evolve. There *are* many excellent review sites, and hugely motivated and professional people out there, but finding them and then keeping track of them, is something of a problem. :-)

Amazon's sales are reflecting that the honeymoon is over and the eReader market has become jaded. Now we all just have to work that little bit harder!

Great post, Lynette. Since signing with an indie publisher I've become much more aware (as opposed to not at all) of the ways in which the review system currently available is being used (and potential readerships manipulated); in this scenario, artifice damages all of us.

Excellent post, Lyn! One of the problems I see is the dire lack of any independent reviewers (other than book review blogs) to give some kind of credibility rating to the hundreds of indie/self-pubbed offerings being put out every day. Given that 'serious' mainstream reviewers still have a firm closed door policy towards anything that's self-published, the problem is acute. But you're right: there need to be changes. I'm just not sure where they're going to come from, especially given the commercial forces encouraging everyone to think they can be the next bestselling author.

Hiya Alyx, thanks for stopping by. (xoxoxo) The workshops *are* fun, and useful. I hope that the program continues, and continues to develop. There was a wide range of people there, myself and another classmate from '02: writers at all stages of their careers. The one-day sessions work as stepping stones, and because they're subject or theme-specific, there's a lot of focus. I count myself lucky to have been able to attend two. If I had a choice, I'd do them all! Hope to see you soon, if not earlier, then at the UBC bookstore in April. :-)
